We want to make an impact

An impact with our beers, but also in dealing with nature. As a result of our growth in recent years, our CO2 emissions and water consumption have increased considerably. We are going to compensate for this.

BREWING 100 LITRES = PLANTING 1 TREE

CO2 compensation & nature preservation

Planting trees

For birds and people

It is simple: for every hectolitre (100L) we brew, we are planting one tree. In this way we generously compensate for CO2 emissions during our brewing process and we create a large area of nature for birds and people. The trees are planted in coorperation with our partner Trees for the Future. By planting these trees we can protect the soil, increase biodiversity and provide local employment. In addition to the trees we plant per litre brewed, we plant a tree for every sale in our webshop. We also invest our revenue from the sales of our beer Valkmanschap in planting trees. Finally, we work together with a number of passionate hospitality businesses , our Green Nests. Together with them we plant a tree for every litre of our beer sold in their businesses.

  • 1 LITRE BEER = 800 GRAMS of CO2 EMISSIONS

Brewing one litre of lager costs 420 grams at a large brewery, at smaller breweries the emissions are higher. To be on a safe side, we assume 800 grams of CO2 per litre.

  • 1 TREE = 314 KG CO2 ABSORPTION

According to Trees for the Future, a tree absorbs an average of 15.7 kg of CO2 per year. If we assume a very cautious lifespan of 20 years per tree, this means that a tree absorbs an average of 314kg CO2.

  • BREWING 1 HECTOLITRE = PLANTING 1 TREE

Based on these key figures, a tree compensates the CO2 emissions of 392 litres of beer. However, we go much further and plant one three for every 100 litres we brew.

“Thanks to the collaboration with Bird Brewery, we can plant a large number of trees every year. It also helps people realize that nature is important and that together we can create a greener world.”

1 litre of beer = 6 litres of water

Compensation of drinking water

Drinking water

Compensating

To brew one litre of beer, a brewery uses an average of 4 to 6 litres of drinking water. This is drinking water that is not available everywhere in the world. To compensate for this, we work together with our partner Made Blue. In 2019 we donated 1,200,000 litres of drinking water to achieve their mission: to give as many people in developing countries acces to clean drinking water as possible

“It is good to see that Bird Brewery is aware about their water consumption, which is reflected in the same amount of clean drinking water in developing countries. Together with Made Blue Foundation, Bird Brewery is making a measurable difference to hundreds of people elsewhere on earth.”
